Ha-s Os

Humilitas Occidit Superbiam

DAVID WITH THE HEAD OF GOLIATH

Is a work by Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio). Caravaggio is an impressive painter who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is considered one of the pioneers of Baroque art and is known for features such as dramatic lighting, naturalism and realism in his art.

  • Wall Sculpture

Caravaggio brings his work together with the story. The severed head of the scary-looking, proud Goliath, with his sad and sorrowful gaze, was cut off by David, lifted into the air by his hair, and the war ended.

This war symbolizes the victory of humility over arrogance, which we encounter in religious stories and works.

Caravaggio's Sword

My deep interest in this work of Caravaggio, the genius child of his time, which we often encounter in readings about art history, started when we discussed the sword in his hand and the signs on it in a group of friends. Therefore, it gave us the opportunity to go over and talk about the expressions in religious texts once again.

At this point, I will not go over the story again, but those who are curious about the original will need to take a look at the book of Samuel in the Old Testament. (Ps.XXXIII, serm.1) We know from religious texts that Goliath’s death occurred with the stone that David carried in his pocket and threw with a sling. Goliath’s proud attitude was considered as the essence of the evil entity, while David’s humility was symbolized by Christ.

In the end, the proud Goliath was defeated with a simple slingshot and a single piece of stone.
From here, I would like to talk about the composition and elements in my work called “Ha-s Os”, based on the story.
A simple wooden frame with a green fabric background, symbolizing humility, and a Cross-guard made of ram’s horns, inspired by the flocks of the shepherd David, placed on a background knitted with elastic fishing line that is as simple but dense enough to fill the background, and despite all this humility, faith and The main structure, which represents the strength of that belief, gives the sword its strong attitude, and is designed with a piston rod knitted with leather, constitutes the upper body of the work.

The body of the sword is constructed with plexiglass material to reflect the light transmittance of the snake skin covered on it. The indispensable phrase of the work, the phrase “Ha-s Os”, becomes evident thanks to the LED lighting and proximity sensor in the background of the work, which detects the viewer and turns on the lighting feature when the work is approached.
